£200,000 CHURCH FIELD BILL
A couple have been landed with a £200,000 church repair bill after losing a seven-year legal battle. Andrew and Gail Wallbank inherited a field classified as rectoral property - making them "lay rectors" of the parish. Under the 1932 Chancel Repairs Act, based on centuries-old law, this also made them liable for repairs to St John the Baptist Church.
Mr Wallbank, 66, and his wife, 59, from Glebe Farm, Aston Cantlow, Warwickshire, were initially presented with a bill for £95,000, but the cost of the work has since doubled. Yesterday's High Court ruling in London means the couple may have to sell their farm to pay for the work to be done.
They said: "The Church is not living by its teaching and is hiding behind an archaic law"

Originally, after losing the case, The Wallbanks won an appeal. But the good old Church of England went to the House of Lords and managed to pull off a final victory. Now a hard-working couple, approaching an age where they should be able to relax and enjoy the benefits of their labours are about to lose the lot! Is this what Christianity is all about? I think not!
The Wallbanks cannot even sell the field, as no one would buy it if they knew the responsibilities that go with it. They even offered to GIVE the land to the Church of England but the Church refused to accept it!
Yes, it seems that the Church of England will stop at nothing to build their empire and maintain it by any devious (but technically legal) means that they can find. If you know of anything similar, please let me know about it. My already low opinion of the Church of England has now disappeared off the bottom of the scale!
