WEBSITE AUTHOR:

TONY SALMON

THIS WEBSITE was set up on 14th January 2007 in attempt to make people aware of the Church of England's intentions for the Liverpool Blue Coat School which I attended in the 1970s, and hopefully show the strength of public feeling to the Secretary of State who will decide, anytime now (when he has "considered" all the thousands of letters and e-mails opposing the move), whether to maintain the "status quo" or to fly in the face of the wishes of almost everyone - pupils, staff, governors, parents and friends of Liverpool's only Grammar School.

The site will be updated regularly, so THANK YOU for visiting - please come back

VISITORS:

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND have requested that the Secretary of State for Education and Skills re-designate the LIVERPOOL BLUE COAT SCHOOL as a Church of England School.  To support their claim they refer to a document from 1739 which makes reference to the school's Founding Document of 1708. This includes a statement that pupils would receive religious instruction in accordance with the doctrines of the Church of England.

Prior to 1829 it was not legal for a school to follow any other doctrine.  The Blue Coat School has never operated as a C of E school. The C of E did not offer any support over the years, nor did it try to defend the school in 1984 when Liverpool City Council attempted to close it down. When schools were designated under the 1998 Education Act, the Church made no claim on it. At that time the buildings were rather dilapidated and in need of renovation.

In 2004, an £8 million refurbishment and extension of the school buildings was completed. Then the Church of England suddenly appeared and asked the Secretary of State to re-designate the school as a C of E school.

Since 2001 the C of E has opened four secondary schools in Liverpool. They claim that they have nothing to gain by the re-designation of the Liverpool Blue Coat School, but they are putting a tremendous amount of time, effort and (presumably) money into their campaign.

I felt so strongly about this intrusion into the life of my old school that I added a section onto my personal website (see "LINKS" page). I received such a tremendous response that it soon outgrew the available web-space, so I have moved it to a website of its own.

The Blue Coat School is not the Church of England's only target. They have also robbed a hard-working couple of their lifes' savings as they were about to retire. See the Dirty Trick page.

" I WANT THAT ONE!"

The deadline for "consultation" with Secretary of State Alan Johnson has now passed and we are awaiting his decision. As soon as I hear anything, it will be posted on this site.
